30TH ANNUAL EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS AWARDS
The Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is excited to be celebrating 30 years of Business Excellence this year at the 2019 Excellence in Business Awards on October 17, 2019.
Join us for a fun and high-energy night of celebration as we recognize the outstanding success of our thriving business community and their contributions to the economic growth and prosperity of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM), Cape Breton Island and beyond!
The Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for their 30th Annual Excellence in Business Awards. This is your chance to nominate a person, business or organization that over the last year has pushed themselves to make an impact on our community.

Business of the Year
The Business of the Year Award is the pinnacle of Cape Breton Regional Municipality business success. The winner demonstrates significant business achievement, has sustained growth with a pathway for future growth and shows the potential to go on to become a true pillar in business on our island and in our province. To qualify, nominees must have been in business for more than two years as of August 31, 2019. Nominees must also have an active business operating in the CBRM, and have the majority of the business ownership within the province of Nova Scotia, and the headquarters of the business located within the CBRM.
Rose Schwartz Female Business Person of the Year
Presented to recognize a local female business leader who has demonstrated achievement in ownership or management of a business, or who has made significant contributions to the business environment in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The individual selected will have demonstrated leadership in bringing about business growth and have an outstanding reputation. This individual demonstrates exceptional management skills through many factors, including but not limited to, innovation, cost controls, leadership, community-mindedness, quality of business performance, problem-solving abilities in response to adversity, etc.
Irving Schwartz Male Business Person of the Year
Presented to recognize a local male business leader who has demonstrated achievement in ownership or management of a business, or who has made significant contributions to the business environment in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The individual selected will have demonstrated leadership in bringing about business growth and have an outstanding reputation. This individual demonstrates exceptional management skills through many factors, including but not limited to, innovation, cost controls, leadership, community-mindedness, quality of business performance, problem-solving abilities in response to adversity, etc.
Jack Yazer Young Entrepreneur of the Year
This award recognizes a young entrepreneur under 40 years of age who dares to take risks, dive into uncertainty and overcome challenges with innovative solutions. This entrepreneur has created a company(ies) that has grown, and in turn, created jobs that boost the economy and inspire others with their vision, leadership, and achievement. This award celebrates a young entrepreneur who is building and leading a successful, growing and dynamic business(es) within the CBRM. Nominees must have an active business operating in the CBRM. The majority of the business must have ownership within the province of Nova Scotia and the headquarters of the business must be located within the CBRM.
New Business of the Year
This new business has made an outstanding contribution to our local economy since opening its doors! The owner(s) of this business has an entrepreneurial spirit, good employee/employer relations and has demonstrated excellent customer service and/or product delivery. This award is given to a CBRM business that has opened within the last 24 months as of August 31, 2019. This business can’t be an expansion of an existing business, an existing business that has undergone a name change, or an existing business that has relocated.
Beyond Borders Exporter of the Year
This award recognizes the achievements of a business within the CBRM that has contributed to our exporting strength of our Island by achieving extraordinary results in out-of-province markets with their product. Nominees must have an office within the CBRM and a minimum of 40% of customers, partners or revenues must come from markets outside of the Province of Nova Scotia.
Innovation and Advancement Award
Innovate (verb): make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.
This award is presented to a CBRM business that is pushing conventional boundaries and is disrupting and reshaping their industry or sector through achievements in bringing innovative thinking, creativity, concepts, products, etc. to the market. This could be done in many ways, including but not limited to the following: a creative business concept that brings innovation to market, product creation or an innovative approach that improves productivity or work processes.
Social Enterprise of the Year
This award is presented to a business or organization that has the mandate to address social, environmental, cultural and/or economic challenges within our communities through the sale of goods and services. This business or organization is making a positive impact within our community by addressing social needs and creating social change through business.
Community Impact Award
This award is presented to a CBRM business that has been a leader in finding ways of doing business while also doing good for our community. This business sees community investment as a core part of their values and clearly demonstrates its dedication to community-mindedness. This award is open to businesses from all industries and nominees do not have to be companies that work exclusively in community engagement or development.
Workplace Excellence Award
This award recognizes a business that goes above and beyond for their employees and provides an outstanding work environment in the CBRM. The business clearly values employee development and retention on the same level that it values productivity and business growth. The business also clearly places a high level of importance on corporate culture, a happy and healthy work environment, and prioritizes diversity and accessibility in their employment practices.
Charitable Committee or Organization of the Year
This award is bestowed upon a charitable committee or organization such as, but not limited to, service clubs, associations, charitable organizations, employee groups, or people who have joined together to initiate positive change within the CBRM. The focus will be on the philanthropic activities of the group, and events or fundraising can be used as examples of the group’s efforts their cause.
